Resident Evil: Death Island (2023) – In San Francisco, Jill Valentine faces a zombie outbreak and a new I-Virus. I’ve always been amazed by the prevalence of Resident Evil in our lives. One of the first games that made me fall in love as a child, the campy zombie shooter, somehow endures and continues to gain momentum. Not a year goes by without a new Resident Evil game, film, or TV show, and although they don’t always succeed, like the recent Netflix adaptation, the fear of saturation doesn’t slow Capcom down at all. Another live-action action film is reported to be in development, while Resident Evil: Death Island, the fourth canonical Resident Evil animated film, is released today.

Death Island has been marketed as the ultimate fan-service film for Resident Evil fans, bringing together Avengers-level teamwork and the greatest heroes in RE history. If you want to see Leon and Chris as two rocket launcher-wielding badasses or Jill and Claire performing acrobatic backflips, there’s plenty of that, but there’s also a level of thematic depth here that you might not expect.

Death Island is a story about how our traumas change us and the difficult process of freeing our souls from guilt. It’s a much more emotionally influential film than it should be, and it doesn’t sacrifice the iconic Resident Evil action and thrills to do so.

Set in 2015, one year after the events of Vendetta and two years after Resident Evil 6, Leon, working with the DSO, is on the hunt for a kidnapped DARPA researcher when he meets Maria Gomez, who survived the same incident and seeks revenge. Meanwhile, Chris and Jill are investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where they discover a new type of T-Virus.

They bring it to Rebecca Chambers for analysis and a cure’s development, only to find that those infected are not behaving like typical zombies. At the same time, Claire learns about a mysterious sea creature responsible for killing whales in San Francisco Bay. All their separate investigations lead them to Alcatraz Island, where they encounter a villain unlike any they’ve faced before.
