Extraction 2 (2023) – Assigned to extract a family under the control of a Georgian gangster, Tyler Rake infiltrates one of the deadliest prisons in the world to rescue them. The extraction mission intensifies, and the gangster meets his end in the heat of battle. His vengeful identical twin brother tracks down Rake and his team to Sydney.
Supervised and crafted by the famed Russo Brothers of Marvel films, “Extraction” serves as an example of the diminishing breed of high-budget, super-violent adventure. Whether the main character is named John Rambo, Jason Bourne, or John Wick, he is a battle-hardened, highly skilled killer who chooses not to kill anymore but is repeatedly pushed back into it.
He has a tragic and mournful past, and because of this, he is portrayed by an actor so intense in violent scenes that you’d believe he could take 100 blows to the head, face, and chest, plus gunshots, knife wounds, and grenade concussions, and keep walking.
Critic Robert Bran Taylor referred to these films as part of the canon of Sad Action Heroes. Chris Hemsworth is the most prominent newcomer in this category. He plays Tyler Rake—an ideal name for an action hero, but Hemsworth makes him feel like a real person. He is an incredibly physical actor, perhaps as good as Schwarzenegger and Stallone in their prime, but with a broader range.
He plays a cunning playboy, a legendary computer hacker, a depressed mercenary, a 19th-century whaling hunter, a cult leader, and the mighty Thor, all convincingly. He has a touch of young Sean Connery’s swagger too. But there’s also buried sadness within him, and that’s what the “Extraction” films delve into.
Tyler used to be a special forces soldier in the Australian Army. He chose to return to Afghanistan for another tour while his son battled an incurable illness and was absent when the boy passed away. His marriage subsequently fell apart, and he became a mercenary.
Guilt over his failures as a husband and parent is the driving force in the “Extraction” franchise, much like amnesia in the “Bourne” films and mourning in the “John Wick” series. Tyler’s adventures are tales of redemption, set against the purifying fire of action films, filled with flawed father figures who abuse, neglect, or warp their children and see them as extensions of their own ego.
